New/Old Concepts....Sion Caelo Animus

Okay, so I went in search of my old sketch's I had of Sion from when I was creating his character.....Though they are both shocking quality and lacking in technical skill, hopefully you will be able to gather some sort of idea of the style I was going for at the time...however, with the sudden decison to re-invent him, and other possible characters I had in the pipeline....there will be some drastic changes, somthing I'm quite excited about....

Anyway, here's what I had in mind back then....

Tank

Birth

Confrontation

Trance

Escape: Sion and Rain

Fusion: Sion/Rain

This is my story....

Okay.....So I've been waiting for the right time where my technical skills reach the right level to unleash this beast of a character that's been years in the making......Litereally...

So back when I was...well 17/18 I wrote a section of a detailed story and submitted it for my Film Studies Coursework, in the form of a screenplay....however previous to that, I had been writing/designing characters to fit into the narrative, as well as a detailed plot outline...

I really wanted to make a fantasy/sci-fi piece that was set in modern day reality, inspired by a mixture of elements, such as final fantasy, bleach, x-men etc...where characters would have special ablilties, that reflected their personality, and call them forth from their 'soul' at any given moment to fight against their enemies, ranging from weapons, to magic etc...but to really make the characters more believable, and relative to the audience, they would be apart of everyday life, and experience everyday things, emotions that show how human they really are, and connect to the viewer/player on a more personal level.

I really feel like their isnt enough games/films that reflect these qualities....

So basically, in a nutshell it starts with this modern day city, where the character all live. Just along the borders of the city lay some old, desolate ruins of an ancient civilisation...though completely disregarded by the populus over the years, and destroyed by generations of neglect, it actually portrays the bordering cities genetic heritage to the civiliastion (which actually is an alien one, special powers etc) but over the years these 'genes' have become dominated/diluted by human intergration, thought still laying recessive in thier DNA.

Then basically out of the ruins one day....this boy appears, as well a girl elsewhere....there found with weird identical markings on their backs, and seperately taking into foster care as orphans, never knowing the other. Turns out these children, (who have actually been warped to earth from a far planet for unknown reasons, when reached a certain age unlock their full potential (powers) as well as activate any 'recessive genes' in the population around them, as though leaking radiation...

The government however, have been aware of this years prior, and wait for the right time for the two 'now teenagers' to awaken and use these 'powers' in experiments etc....and basically results in the two being caught...and escaping....with help from their close friends....(which the at the time, have also awoken) and epic fights ensue with 'soldiers' who have undergone synthetic alteration to battle the 'Resistance' whilst still trying to remain 'hidden' in society, carrying out their daily lives.

So that is as basic as I could possibly get with the outline, hopefully it doesnt sound cheap like that...but
It's been such a powerful part of my art/storytelling since I can remember, even the basic sketch's were a stepping stone in my development as an artist, and is what helped me push myself to do CG, which is why I want to revisit, and breathe new life into it....

Sion Caelo Animus is the main character's name....which was intially just 'Sion' but I spent hours researching yesterday to find a more 'complete' version, that reflected the character as i wanted it to.....hence the other two names....both in latin, they translate to 'Sky, Soul'

I think my next move would be to upload my old version's of Sion, to give more of a sense of development in both my skill, and idea's.

Erin Development

okay...so I got quite a bit bummed out over doing this piece, the angles were all wrong, due to not using  strong reference.....at the same time trying to stay true to the original sketch....so I decided to change the body entirely and take some proper reference photo's of my girlfriend upper body...

Alongside this....I tweaked alot of the detail of the eye area......as well as the connection between the hair and face....though this still needs alot of work...

I do have plans for the left eye......part of putting more 'character' into Erin....I just felt there wasn't much point in making someone my own without adding another interesting aspect to give narrative or mystery...

Thoughts etc...

Erin Mid Wip

Hi, my name is bob....and I always seem to bite off more than I can chew.....

Thats kind of how I felt last week about this piece when I reached the skin part....It's been a long trial and error exericse, and I feel like i've jumped into the deep end and attempted (without any previous character painting knowledge).....to know what i'm doing lol.....

The better approach to learn, would have probably used a (really) 'strong' pose/reference picture (something I always forget when doing portraits, and always tends to bite me in the ass), and just copy that to get the basics.....or even follow a tutorial through and through....but I'm impatient I guess

Anyway, here's what i've come up with so far....

There still needs to be darking of the hair and sking around it so there's more depth, as well as definition of the neck area, as well as the eye which has the dark ring to give a guide for later....just in general I think now I need to work on making the attributes feel together...

Comment/tips welcome
